"Street Fighter" Opens on Top of the Box Office With $13 Million on Friday
Four new films opened, including the Elizabeth Holmes documentary and a new "Sense and Sensibility."

A busy weekend of new releases ended with "Street Fighter" in first place, Variety reports. The Paramount film made $13 million on Friday from 3,575 North American theaters and is expected to reach $31 million by Sunday. Directed by Kitao Sakurai, it stars Noah Centineo and Andrew Koji as two estranged fighters in the 90s who are recruited for a tournament where they must face each other. It is based on the Capcom video game series and is the third film version. The first, in 1994 with Jean-Claude Van Damme, earned $100 million, while a 2009 version made just $12.8 million on a $50 million budget.
In second place was the A24 documentary "You Can See Everything," about Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, which earned $5.54 million from 855 theaters. For over three years, Lance Oppenheim the filmmaker and Nathan Fielder the comedian secretly made this project, which features Holmes one month prior to the start of her 11-year jail term for cheating investors. Rival estimates say it will add $12.45 million by Sunday, more than the first guess of $7 to $8 million. It should pass "Melania" from Amazon MGM, which had the biggest opening for a non-music documentary in over ten years, with $7.1 million.
In third place, the Focus Features film "Sense and Sensibility" made $3.3 million on Friday from 2,545 theaters and aims for a $6.7 million weekend. Directed by Georgia Oakley, it stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles as the sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, who deal with love, loss and money worries after leaving their family estate. The most famous earlier version is the 1995 film with Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet.
Disney's "Whalefall" was fourth with $3 million from 2,065 theaters, and the thriller is expected to make $7 million by Sunday. It follows a scuba diver, played by Austin Abrams, who is swallowed by a sperm whale and has one hour of oxygen left. Fifth was Universal's "Other Mommy," a horror film, with $2.5 million on Friday, bringing its total to about $44.35 million after the weekend.
