Apple has announced a new MacBook Pro with a screen that uses OLED technology, according to WIRED. OLED is a type of screen where each tiny point of light creates its own glow. Laptops with OLED screens have been around for about a decade.

The new MacBook Pro uses a tandem OLED panel, which Apple has named PROLED XDR. The screen has a peak brightness of 2,000 nits, a unit that measures how bright a screen is. Its normal limit is 1,000 nits. The screen gets brighter, up to 2,000 nits, when the adaptive brightness sensor detects a need for it.

Apple previously used mini-LED screens on the MacBook Pro and the Studio Display XDR. Mini-LED screens can suffer from blooming, which is when light spreads into areas where it should not be. WIRED reports that the author saw the new screen at a media event in Los Angeles.

The new 14-inch MacBook Pro weighs 3 pounds. It is 12 percent lighter than before. It uses the same aluminum chassis, which is the frame that holds the laptop's parts, as the previous MacBook Pro.

Apple says its anti-reflective coating, which reduces glare from light, is state-of-the-art. A nano-texture display option is available as an upgrade on the 14-inch and 16-inch models. The screen also supports touch input.

For comparison, a touchscreen OLED laptop can currently be bought for as little as $700. A cheap OLED laptop maxes out around 300 nits, while a higher-end OLED laptop may reach 1,000 nits in HDR content, which is video with a wider range of light and dark. The iPad Pro has had an OLED screen since 2024 and can reach 1,600 nits for HDR content and 1,000 nits for SDR content.

The Touch Bar, a strip of touch controls, was introduced on the MacBook Pro in 2016.
