Shabby Chic Style Is Coming Back Into Homes
Soft colors, worn-looking furniture, and floral prints are returning to home decor.

Shabby chic is a home style that was made popular in the late '90s and early '00s. It is back now. The style is returning thanks to the popularity of cottagecore, grandma-inspired everything, and nostalgia-driven vintage-inspired interiors.
Shabby chic rooms have a few easy-to-spot features. The furniture is lightly distressed, which means it has been worn down a little on purpose to look older. The colors are bright and airy, and the room often has delicate floral prints and ruffled fabrics.
Target has announced that it is bringing back the "Simply Shabby Chic" line by Rachel Ashwell. Shoppers will be able to buy shabby chic products again at the store.
Interior designer Christine Tuttle likes Simply White by Benjamin Moore for shabby chic off-white walls. She recommends matte or eggshell paint finishes, which are soft and not shiny, rather than high-gloss paint. Soft blues, dusty rose, and sage green are also excellent shabby chic colors.
For furniture, Vivian Robins, an interior designer at Arketa Design Studio, suggests pairing whitewashed furniture with traditional walnut pieces. Layered textiles, such as ruffled, quilted, or lacey fabrics, are a big part of the style. Tuttle suggests combining plain linen, a floral print, and a smaller print like gingham check.
Flowers are the go-to pattern for shabby chic. They can be added with wallpaper and quilts. Robins suggests hanging a wall grouping of vintage floral paintings in a mix of sizes and frames.
Lighting also matters in this style. Tuttle says shabby chic lighting in the country French style features dangling crystals and pastel vintage table lamps. She also says there should be no recessed or modern lighting in shabby chic decor.
